Bellingham,
Washington. The city of Bellingham may be one of the best-kept secrets
in the nation. Perhaps
that's why the local motto - "Let Us Surprise You" - is so appropriate.
The city is home to more than 61,000 residents who enjoy affordable housing,
a great quality of life, safe, friendly neighborhoods, state-of-the-art health
care facilities, award-winning schools and nearly unlimited recreational opportunities.
Located on the shores of the Puget Sound, Bellingham is just 90 miles north of
Seattle and less than an hour's drive south of Vancouver, BC. With majestic Mount
Baker serving as its backdrop, the waters of Bellingham Bay serve as a foundation
for fishing, cold storage, boat building, shipping, paper processing and marina
operations. Squalicum Harbor is the second largest in Puget Sound and houses
more than 1,900 pleasure and commercial boats. The historic Fairhaven Historical
District offers a mixture of restaurants, art galleries and specialty shops.
The downtown cultural district includes the respected Whatcom Museum of History
and Art. When it comes to real estate, Bellingham has it all. Waterfront, upland,
and valley properties featuring spectacular views are all available. Condominiums
and townhouses range in price from $60,000 to nearly $500,000 for newer beachfront
models. Pricing for single-family homes starts at $70,000 and reaches up to $1.9
million and more for large, secluded waterfront estates. Land is also available
for custom homes. Bellingham is the county seat for Whatcom County and boasts
a strong local economy, thanks to its location near the Canadian border, its
world-class port, steady population growth and highly educated workforce. Bellingham
was recently chosen by Fortune Magazine as "best city to balance work
and family life."
The Bellingham School
District serves the educational needs of about 13,000 students and
provides quality-learning experiences for all ages. As recipients of
numerous national, state and regional awards, Bellingham schools have
been recognized for excellence across the nation. In addition to having
a top nationally-rated public school district, Bellingham is home to
the outstanding Western Washington University plus Whatcom Community
College and Bellingham Technical College.
